Peg Willingham - FairTrade American

Peg Willingham is the Executive Director of Fairtrade America, the U.S. arm of Fairtrade International, the leading international fairtrade certification system. They work with businesses to help them certify their products as ethically sourced from farmers and workers who get a fair deal. They educate shoppers about the lack of fairness in many supply chains and the ethical brands available in the U.S. She previously served as Head of Advocacy and Policy at the International Food Policy Research Institute's HarvestPlus program, an international non-profit organization working to support smallholder farmers and reduce malnutrition in developing countries by making staple crops more nutritious and higher-yielding. In that role, she oversaw all government relations activities across the organization. She also led HarvestPlus' participation in the MacArthur Foundation's 100&Change competition, helping the organization receive a grant of $15 million.

Previously, Ms. Willingham headed Moran for Congress, responsible for outreach to local activists and communities and for fundraising. She was also a member of the University of Virginia's Sorensen Institute's 2013 Political Leadership Program class.

In 2012, Ms. Willingham was a team leader in Northern Virginia on the campaign to re-elect President Obama, organizing several hundred volunteers to achieve record-high voter turnout and strong support for the President and other Democrats. Before that, Ms. Willingham helped to create and lead the United Nations Foundation's Shot@Life campaign, advocating to expand access to vaccines in developing countries. From 2007 to 2011, she was the Senior Director of External Affairs at Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation, where she oversaw advocacy, communications, and resource mobilization efforts. From 2003 to 2007 she was a senior director at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, responsible for advocacy to the U.S. government regarding the need to accelerate a preventive vaccine against HIV/AIDS, particularly in the developing world. Previously, she was the Assistant Vice President for Latin America and Canada for Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), responsible for advocacy regarding trade issues.

From 1987-2000, Ms. Willingham was a Foreign Service Officer, serving in Latin America and the Middle East. During her State Department career, she received five Superior Honor Awards. Ms. Willingham received a BA from the University of Virginia and an MA from the University of Michigan.
