Dr. Bonnie Jacobs, Ph.D, is a professor of earth sciences at SMU, and expert on paleobotany and the historic influence of climate on plant geography and leaf morphology.
As a paleobotanist, Dr. Bonnie Jacobs has a long view of Earth history, and this includes a long view of climate change. She notes that the geologic rate in which past climate changes took place (over many hundreds to many thousands of years) has since been greatly accelerated in the last 4-5 decades.
Dr. Jacobs reminds us that these accelerated changes are not only very much in our control, but also an unfortunate result of our contribution to climate change, when she states: as we witness the “Sixth Mass Extinction [of various plants and animals] we know that species losses are due to a whole host of human-induced conditions, including rapid climate change. Humans are in the unique position of being able to understand the global changes taking place and impacting all life on Earth, including us, and being able to analyze our own culpability.”
